news Bordetella Bronchiseptica Pneumonia in a Man with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome: A Case Report

Presented by:Journal of Medical Case Reports / Michal Galeziok, Ingram Roberts and Jo-Anne Passalacqua
Summary points:A 42-year-old African-American man with HIV presents with shortness of breath, right-sided pleuritic chest pain, non-productive cough, and low-grade fever progressing for several weeks. He was receiving pneumocystis jiroveci prophylaxis, but was not taking any other medications or antiretroviral therapy. Physical, lung, and cardiac examinations, laboratory data, and radiological imaging are described; images provided. The authors suggest that Bordetella bronchiseptica be added to the differential list of pathogens which can affect people with HIV and pulmonary symptoms, and advise sputum culture, as well as history of animal exposure, in these patients.
