BIAsp 30 Improves Post-Prandial Glycaemic Control In Type 1 And 2 Diabetics

A DGReview of :"Premixed insulin aspart 30 vs. premixed human insulin 30/70 twice daily: a randomized trial in Type 1 and Type 2 diabetic patients"

Biphasic insulin aspart 30 (BIAsp 30) significantly improves post-prandial glycaemic control in people with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes compared with biphasic human insulin 30/70 (BHI 30).

According to researchers in Germany, England and Denmark there was no increase in the risk of hypoglycaemia and overall control was similar in those treated on a twice-daily regimen with immediate premeal injections of BIAsp 30.

In this 12-week open-label study, 294 Type 1 and Type 2 diabetics using twice-daily insulin were randomised to compare the efficacy and safety of BIAsp 30 and BHI 30.

Analysis of variance of 12-week data, adjusted for baseline level, was used to assess efficacy.

The researchers found BIAsp 30 to be as effective as BHI 30 based on the primary efficacy measure, HbA1c, with a mean difference of -0.01 percent Hb.

When averaged over the three main meals, meal-time self-measured blood glucose increment was significantly lower in subjects taking BIAsp 30 compared with those in the BHI 30 group.

There were significant improvements after breakfast and dinner, before lunch and at bedtime. Blood glucose was seen to be around 1.0 mmol/l lower in the BIAsp 30 group.

The number of major hypoglycaemic episodes in the BIAsp 30 group was half the number of those in the BHI 30 group.

No significant difference was found, however, between the two treatments in the overall risk of both minor and major hypoglycaemia.
