Oral Verapamil HCl Approved in Japan for Tachyarrhythmia

TOKYO -- March 4, 2008 -- Verapamil hydrochloride (Vasolan) 40 mg tablet has been approved for atrial fibrillation/flutter and paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia in Japan. This is the first oral calcium channel blocker to be approved for tachyarrhythmia in Japan.

Verapamil HCl has been used to treat ischaemic heart disease for more than 40 years, and it has been used to treat arrhythmia in the United States and European countries for many years because of its beneficial effects on heart rate control in atrial fibrillation/flutter and stopping/preventing paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia. In Japan, verapamil HCl for intravenous injection 5 mg, which contains the same active ingredients as the oral form tablet, has already been approved for the treatment of tachyarrhythmia. The additional indications approved today for the oral form of will provide a wider range of treatment options for patients who are suffering from tachyarrhythmia.
