FDA Approves Levocetirizine Dihydrochloride for Paediatric Nasal Allergies
NEW YORK -- August 25, 2009 -- The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved levocetirizine dihydrochloride (Xyzal) for children aged 6 months and older for the relief of symptoms of perennial allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria, and for children aged 2 years and older for symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis.
"There are options for treating nasal allergies in young children, one of which is [levocetirizine dihydrochloride]," said Michael Blaiss, MD, Department of Pediatrics and Medicine, University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Memphis Tenessee.
"The availability of a liquid treatment with the established safety and efficacy of levocetirizine dihydrochloride provides caregivers a new treatment option that can help relieve nasal allergy symptoms in young patients once diagnosed by a physician."
In patients aged 12 years and older, side effects may include sleepiness, tiredness, sore throat, and dry mouth. In children aged 6 to 12 years, side effects may include fever, cough, sleepiness, and nose bleeds. In children aged 1 to 5 years, side effects may include fever, diarrhoea, vomiting, and ear infections. In children aged 6 months to 11 months, side effects may include diarrhea and constipation.
