Summary points:	This text-based CME activity uses a paediatric case scenario to outline the signs, symptoms, and complications of an upper respiratory tract infection, explain when surgery for a child presenting with symptoms of cold should be postponed and when it can proceed, discuss the use of a laryngeal mask airway, and review strategies to decrease postoperative critical incidents.
