ANAHEIM, CA -- May 25, 2007 -- Terazosin is effective and safe for treatment of lower urinary-tract symptoms (LUTS) in women, according to a study presented here at the American Urological Association (AUA) annual meeting on May 22[]nd[].
Bee Yean Low, MD, School of Pharmaceutical Science, University of Science, Penang, Malaysia, said that alpha-1 blockers have been used traditionally for men with LUTS associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
The objective of the study, stated Dr. Low, was for subjects to show an improvement in their score on the IPSS QOL assessment index, as well as in the 24-hour frequency-volume chart, peak flow rate and post-void residual urine.
One hundred women between the ages of 19 and 70 years met the primary inclusion criteria of total International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) > 8 and symptom duration of 1 month or more. Subjects were randomised to receive either terazosin or placebo at an initial dose of 1 mg once daily titrated to 1 mg twice daily then to 2 mg twice daily for a period of 14 weeks.
At the end of 14 weeks of treatment, both groups showed a reduction in the mean IPSS quality-of-life (QOL) assessment index; 85% of the subjects in the terazosin group scored < 8 in the IPSS QOL assessment index compared with 55% in the placebo group ([]P[] =.01). Dr. Low noted that the terazosin group had greater reductions ([]P[] <.01) in IPSS item scores of frequency and straining.
Outcome measures included IPSS QOL assessment index, total IPSS, all domains of QOL of the King's Health Questionnaire, 24-hour frequency volume chart, peak flow rate and post-void residual urine.
Forty percent of the terazosin group experienced adverse drug reactions compared with 58% in the placebo group ([]P[] >.05).
